CAMBRIDGE -- Dozens of Bradford House residents came out on Tuesday to hear from one of the three candidates running for Mayor in Cambridge. However, candidate Octavene Saunders spent much of the time listening to the concerns of the local residents.
Many of their suggestions centered upon security and included the following:
* Affordable shopping in the area for seniors
* An apartment building for only senior citizens, with possibly shopping stores on the ground floor, should be built on the vacant lot across the street.
* Jobs for the handicap
* More foot and bike patrols
* Additional security cameras
* Addressing concerns about the ground floor bathroom
* More exterior lighting.
* The acquisition of a security guard
Mrs. Saunders said she would investigate a number of the concerns and contact residents by Saturday.
Mrs. Saunders said she and other citizens are in the process of seeking grant possibilities with the Governor's Office on Crime Prevention for a security guard, and with state representatives concerning additional security cameras.
Residents did note that police will assist people if they are afraid to enter the building.
After recording their responses, Mrs. Saunders explained why she is running for Mayor.
"I believe that I can make a positive difference working with the city council, the citizens, and any governmental body that would help Cambridge. I have to be a diplomat, be calm, try to include everybody in a given situation," she said.
"I'm a new Octavene today. Six years ago I gave my heart to the Lord," she said, adding, "I have learned that I do not need to fuss back at anybody. I don't need to try to intimidate anybody. All I need to do is love the Lord, and trust Him for what He tells me to do."
Mrs. Saunders said, "I'm a changed person and I like myself better." She added it takes three votes on city council to get anything passed, and "I have to have citizens like yourself to support what you're asking me to do. Nobody that takes a political office can accomplish anything by themselves.
She said there would be no personal attacks on candidates and that, "The issues are the issues. The issues for you are on this piece of paper."
Mrs. Saunders said other concerns she had heard from other citizens included the following:
* More recreational opportunities for young people
* More opportunities for young people to stay here when they graduate from school
* A better opportunity for education
* People want their property taxes lowered but keep the same level of service.
Regarding the election, she encouraged the residents, "Make the decision based upon the person you think that will do the best job that will benefit you in this time of life."
