CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge Pine Street Committee (PSC) received on Tuesday a donation for its summer youth program from the Nathan Foundation. This is the first time the PSC has received financial support from the foundation.
William Batson of the Nathan Foundation said the organization was pleased to make the donation to the PSC "so they could proceed with their activities for the youth. This is an investment in our youth. "We feel it is important to support those kind of activities and appreciate the Pine Street Committee keeping our youth involved in positive community activities. We thank the Pine Street Committee for their efforts in working with the youth in an ongoing manner," he said.
In recent years the PSC has held a summer youth program where area young people regardless of race can have fun in a safe environment while at the same time hone some educational skills. Most of the activities occur at the Empowerment Center on Pine Street in Cambridge.
Slated for this summer is a half-hour exercise session each week with the Cambridge Police Department. The Dorchester County YMCA will be directing waterfront fun on the grassy areas and staff from the county's Department of Recreation and Parks will once again work at scheduled times with the children.
Regarding the donation, PSC interim President Jimmy Cornish expressed his appreciation and said, "The Pine Street Committee is working hard and needs the support of the community to continue to carry on the work that they are doing."
Secretary - Treasurer and Coordinator for the PSC summer program Octavene Saunders also thanked the foundation.
