Vendors sought for cultural event
Members of the Dorchester-Cambridge Cultural Festival committee are planning a cultural event to be held April 28 on the 600 block of Pine Street in Cambridge. CAMBRIDGE -- A group of citizens wanting to highlight the cultures of the area has announced there is still room for more vendors for the Dorchester-Cambridge Cultural Festival slated for April 28.
According to committee members, a cultural festival has not been held in decades. A festival called Harambe, Swahili for "coming together as one," had been held in the 1960's and 70's in Cambridge, but predominately focused upon the African-American heritage.
This year's event is designed to be inclusive of as many cultures that wish to participate.
"Everything has evolved now so we are doing something to highlight a coming together of all cultures that we can get to participate," said committee member Octavene Saunders. "We are just building on the past and reinventing for the future."
The event is sponsored in part by the Dorchester Arts Center, and with state funds from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority and the Heart of Chesapeake Country Heritage Area.
"The festival will expose the community to some of the local flavors that are out there," committee member Jane Devlin said. "We certainly have room for more vendors," she added.
Those interested in acquiring vendor space may write Portia Johnson-Ennels, 700 Cornish Drive, Cambridge MD 21613 or call her at (410) 228-7990.
